What is Smudging?
Smudging is a ceremony practiced by some Indigenous peoples of the Americas, that involves the burning of sacred herbs, in some cases for spiritual cleansing or blessing. While the particulars of the ceremonies, and the herbs used can vary widely between tribes and nations, many use forms of sage.
So, when you are using sage to purify the energy in your home, you should say that you are cleansing, not smudging.
Can you do a cleansing with incense?
Theoretically, you can cleanse with any fragrant smoke, including conventional incense. But there are certain plants that have a reputation for raising the vibration of your space. Each of these plants has a different energy and aroma to contribute to your cleansing routine.
Abalone Shell?
While cleansing it is best to use a flame-resistant bowl. The abalone shell has been used for centuries for its durability and flame resistance and this shell can be used with or without a stand to protect surfaces from heat damage while cleansing.
Considerations When Using Sage
Many people ask how often you should sage your home. It is definitely a good idea when moving into a new place or at least every few months.
Aside from that, it is up to you and your intuition to decide when you need an energy cleansing. Check-in with yourself regularly to see if you are feeling stressed, stuffy, or in need of change.
While sage smoke may seem like a great idea for everyone, it might not be the best idea for those who have respiratory issues such as asthma. Smoke, in general, is irritating to sensitive lungs.
If that is the case, you can create a cleansing spray using essential oils. This is a great addition to smoke-free places, too, such as a workplace.
To make your own spray, put a few drops of sage essential oil into a glass spray bottle full of water. Be sure to shake it up each time you use it, as separation will occur.
White Sage - White Sage is the standard sage most people think of when doing a smoke cleansing. Other forms of sage can also be used but the scent will be different, and the cleansing effect maybe not quite as pronounced as with white sage. White sage has great properties for removing negativity, cleansing, and protection. A Great property of Sage smoke it is beneficial to breathe as it has many antimicrobial properties.
The Balsam fir tree has many uses and using the needles of this great plant as a smudge is just one of many. The properties as a cleansing are calming and relaxing energies. The smoke is useful in detoxifying the respiratory system. This fir is the most common type of tree used as a Christmas tree, so for many the scent evokes a happy time.
Blue sage is often known as Grandmother Sage. This purifying herb has great Medicinal and magic applications. The Sage provides spiritual strength and is sometimes used in Exorcism rituals to remove malevolent spirits. AKA Azure Sage and Pitcher Sage.
Cedar is another Great option for cleansing. While the cleansing effect of Cedar is not quite as intense as White Sage, Cedar has other great properties. The cedar tree is a sacred tree believed to have healing properties. This makes Cedar a must use for healing and for ceremonial purposes. Cedar smoke has a friendly and healing energy that is a good alternative for those who have an aversion to sage.
Copal unites the energizing force of the sun with the grounding, transmuting properties of earth. This resin is a great and gentle healer. Copal works by bringing out Negative energies and transmuting them into positive energies. This resin also aids in all sorts of healing - physical, emotional, and environmental, which makes it great to use in a healing or sickroom. Copal also is great for opening and cleaning all the Chakras. Copal is a highly protective energy which aids in manifestation.
Dragon’s blood is a great resin with many uses. Dragon’s blood will remove negativity from a space. Dragon’s blood also has a great Psychic, Magic, and Spiritual energizing property. Juniper is an excellent choice for use instead of a more standard cleansing. Not only does Juniper clear negative energy like other smokes, Juniper can also create a safe, protective, positive, healing space when the negative energy is removed. Juniper is energetically and physically detoxifying as well as centering.
Lavender is used as a cleanser to bring out the powers of calming and cleansing. Lavender has a calming effect on the nervous system. Lavender brings a clean positive energy, opens the heart chakra, and calms situations. Magically it can be used for protection and for love as well. Some traditions maintain the scent of Lavender wards off evil.
Mountain sage is a sage that grows in high altitudes in arid climes. It is good for adding strength and energy in rituals. Mountain sage does dispel negative energy as well.
Black Sage is also known as Mugwort. This herb is often used to protect one against evil spirits. Mugwort is well known as an aid to astral travel and dream Magic. Mugwort also is used to dispel fatigue and aid in divination. Black Sage smoke is often used before or during a divination working for this reason.
Peppermint and sage can be used for its healing and protection energies. Peppermint is also used to increase prosperity and luck.
Rosemary is the herb of “remembrance” and can be used for cleansing rituals, healing, bringing about peace, to awaken and strengthen feminine empowerment and for protection.

Sagebrush is a great addition for its many medical benefits. This richly aromatic herb is used by many in the southwest as part of their purification rituals. Often used as a medicine, it is used in treating headaches, stopping internal bleeding, and preventing infections. The herb is very evocative of the clean windswept deserts of the American southwest.
Sweetgrass is a traditional Native American herb that is also sometimes burned for smudging. Sweet grass holds an energy of blessing with some cleansing properties. Sweetgrass should ideally be used after cleansing with sage, to bring in positive energy after negativity has been released.
Eucalyptus is not just used as a great decongestant during cold season and known for muscle relief in bath products, smoking with eucalyptus is for protection, health boosting as well as being energizing for cleansings.
Pine is an excellent herb for cleansing and protection. Like all evergreens, Pine is associated with prosperity and good health. Pine needles are traditionally used to bless a new home. In Druid lore, the Pine tree stands for persistence, moderation, and self-confidence.
The name Palo Santo translates to "Holy wood" best when used for deep healing and clearing energy. Its benefits include relieving the symptoms of headaches, inflammation, emotional trauma, stress, colds and much more. Great for use after a good cleansing.
