Magickal: This rather ill-smelling root, is used in protective sachets, hung in the home to guard it against lightning, and placed in pillows pinned to a woman's clothing will cause men to "follow her like children." Valerian root is also added to love sachets. If a couple is quarreling introduce some of this herb into the area and all will soon be calm. The Greeks hung a sprig of Valerian under a window to charm away evil. Valerian root, powdered, is sometimes used as "graveyard dust."
Valerian root is associated with the planet Jupiter and the element of water. It is also useful in Samhain and Yule celebration rituals.
Valerian root is useful in spells related to ending guilt and negative self talk and developing self acceptance. It is also useful in animal magic, especially cat magic and evoking animal spirits. Also, for turning bad situations around to one's advantage and finding the positive in a seemingly negative situation.
Medical: Antispasmodic, carminative, nervine, stimulant.
Caution: Do Not Use barbiturates, benzodiazepines, and other sedative drugs, as Valerian has the potential to increase the effects of some sedatives. Do not drive while drinking Valerian Tea. Can be habit forming.
